Zanne is an affix that was started as a self-parody of the name Suzanne. Many words coined to use this affix are largely portmanteau words that were coined as a back-formation of the name Suzanne. The Salvo Underground Zone And Nerd Network Enterprise (activist group that's an acronym of Suzanne) as well as YTMND user Suzanne have coined many words to use this affix, along with the activist group on YTMND.

the name/word "zanne" can be used as a prefix (Zanne-), suffix (-zanne), or a word by itself (Zanne).

Sometimes the word/name Zanne can be used as a crapflood phrase similar to Lurg when expressing activism for the Salvo Underground Zone And Nerd Network Enterprise, or when honoring YTMND user Suzanne.

Etymology

-zanne (as a prefix) is really a back-formation of the name Suzanne, in which the name Suzanne itself is a compound word (or portmanteau word in other regards) based on the names Susan and Anne (though some might think Susan is a back-formation since others would think that "Sue" and "Anne" are another speculated basis), when the name Suzanne was chosen as the basis for a backronym to name an activist group with (i.e. Salvo Underground Zone And Nerd Network Enterprise), the idea of using -zanne as a suffix started when the name Salvozanne was used as a domain for the Facebook page for the Suzanne movement, of which the name Suzanne was chosen as an homage to Suzanne Vega, whom was "mother of the MP3".

Later on Zanne would be used as a stand-alone word to root for activism of the Salvo Underground Zone And Nerd Network Enterprise, as well as be used as a prefix for a name such as Zannechu as an homage to Pichu.

Pronounciation?

The pronunciation of the word "zanne" by itself sometimes sounds like "zonny", and sometimes its pronounced "zay-anne" as in the name Suzanne, which is where this affix comes from.

other instances of Zanne

Just Zanne by itself refers to these concepts:

  • Supremo Zanne, leader of the Suzanne movement. Previously known under the YTMND username Suzanne. But chose this name to reflect a greater ranking of Suzanne activism.
  • sometimes used in crapflooding of YTMND comments by YTMND user Suzanne, in all caps, ZANNE ZANNE ZANNE (and so on)
  • Sault Zanne Vegas, the name of a proposed MP3 album from Suzanne Records, which takes the name Suzanne Vega, and parodies it in a manner that resembles the name Sault Ste. Marie, which is a city in the UP of Michigan.
  • A surname such as Cezanne (like in artist Paul Cezanne) may be similar in pronunciation to the name Suzanne, but one would argue that its too different of a name to be an "alternate spelling", or even just a "portmanteau word" from it.
  • Suzannglish, the name of the special language Suzanne activists speak.
  • Suzanner, another term for a Suzanne activist, as well as an "eye dialect" on the name Susanna, which is a cognate of the name Suzanne, of which Susanna is also used interchangeably with this term.

different spelling

this section covers cognates such as Zanna (like in Susanna, or Suzanna, or similar), as well as other ones like Zette, as in Suzette. Also slight misspellings of "Zanne" are also covered.

-zanne suffix YTMND account campaign

A campaign was proposed for activists of the Suzanne activist group to create new YTMND accounts with the -zanne suffix in them, but this campaign has largely failed since users feared they would be mistaken to be "somebody's alt". So only a handful of usernames to have the -zanne suffix in them were created; Fuzannne (but with 3 "n"'s in it), and Bladezanne, an account that would get deleted, then squatted in 2016, and SupremoZanne, which got seized by max in April 2016.

But later on in 2016, Suzanne took a different approach by starting an account called SusanTrepid, which spoofs the word Intrepid, by taking the name Susan, and replacing the in- prefix of another word which has also been done a handful of times on other in- prefix words, since this username idea would involve paying homage to another YTMND-related activist group.
